Diabetes & Technology

Happy March! Last month, my focus was treating the African American with Diabetes and the response was phenomenal! If by chance you weren't able to catch that series, I made a playlist over on my YouTube channel with those videos HERE. For the month of March, I'm going to dive into DIABETES TECH. Did you know that was a thing? Well, it is & I bet you & your patients are already participating in the tech side of Diabetes! Now let me say this...over the past year (because of COVID-19), we all have embraced technology in all areas of our lives & this doesn’t stop with our patient care. I'm sure many of you are seeing patients virtually. It's kinda apart of our lives now. Diabetes education & management are positioned well for technology. It is not the future but it is the NOW! Diabetes tech is becoming more & more accessible to all so that means we need to lean into it! You may be asking what is diabetes tech...well it includes but not limited to self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG), continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), & insulin pump therapy.

What I would like to do first is give a brief overview of the tech in diabetes care and then discuss the other topics throughout the month. You can catch the Overview of Diabetes & Technology video below:

Over on my YouTube channel, I made individual videos of each...

Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose (SMBG)

  • An approach whereby people with diabetes measure their blood sugar (glycemia) themselves using a glycemic reader (glucose meter).

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)

  • Measures interstitial glucose (which correlates well with plasma glucose, although at times can lag if glucose levels are rising or falling rapidly).

Insulin Pump Therapy

  • These devices deliver rapid-acting insulin throughout the day to help manage blood glucose levels. Most insulin pumps use tubing to deliver insulin through a cannula, while a few attach directly to the skin, without tubing.

I realize that these topics may bring up questions and require more conversation so for those interested in learning more about diabetes technology such as continuous glucose monitoring & insulin pump therapy, triple board certified Arti Thangudu, MD (@drartithangudu) & I recorded a nearly 90 minute workshop. We compiled ALL of your questions, organized them & she answered away! This is a pre-recorded workshop so you can work at your own pace! If you are interested in the workshop + the 16-page accompanying workbook, you can purchase through the link in my below!
